Based on a Russian play, He Who Gets Slapped was the first production to start filming at the newly formed Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer company and features three of the silent movie era’s biggest stars, Norma Shearer, Lon Chaney and John Gilbert.
After his patron, Baron Regnard, steals scientist Paul Baumont’s most important research as well as his wife, the humiliated scientist loses all self-esteem and joins a circus sideshow. There he becomes famous for a routine in which he plays a clown who gets slapped by all the other clowns. Things get worse when he falls in love with bareback horse rider, Consuelo.
This gripping tale of romantic complications and devilish revenge unfolds in a wild and crazy circus setting; a cold psychodrama in which Beaumont relives his betrayal and humiliation over and over every night.
A rarely screened gem, this print was sourced from a French private collection. Intertitles are English, subtitled in French.
This screening features live music accompaniment from composer and pianist Taz Modi and guests.
