Jacques Lecoq maintained that, alongside realism, there were five other levels of play which all inform our theatre-making: Clown, Bouffon, Tragedy, Farce and Melodrama.
Today, the popular understanding is that the term ‘levels of play’ refers to genre. But ‘play’ is too crude and too elemental to be confined by a specific theatrical genre. Play is the mechanism through which we mess about with ideas, take risks, make discoveries and find unexpected possibilities.
We may each have our own preferences when it comes to the levels of play we choose. Going Beyond Yourself explores the physicality of all six, developing an understanding of what each makes possible before asking what happens when we play them against one another, and when we begin to combine them.
The game here is to break the rules, entertain each other and find what we like. Going Beyond Yourself is a workshop for devisers and intending devisers with some experience of theatre-making.
John Wright is an award-winning international teacher and theatre-maker. He co-founded Trestle Theatre Company in 1980 and Told by an Idiot in 1993.
