Creating & Playing with Characters
Being able to take on various characters is an important part of the actor’s craft. In this course a series of exercises and improvisations is used to build strong physical and vocal characters. These are then explored in a variety of situations to see how they interact and relate with each other.
John Mowat’s teaching is based on creating an environment where you can fall flat on your face and then get up and laugh about it. A place in which to play, explore, experiment, make discoveries and have adventures.
In a career as theatre maker, performer and director stretching over four decades John has had created more than 60 productions and his highly visual style of comedy has toured to more than 50 countries worldwide.

Physical and Devised Theatre
The artist is constantly using their work to help people to ‘see again’, ‘think again’ and ‘feel again’.
David Glass will lead an intensive introductory 2-day masterclass in Physical and Devised Theatre.
This workshop will introduce participants to David Glass’s hugely practical approach to physical and devised theatre. It is rooted in the body, the principle that all life and expression grows out of movement, and that theatre is the imagination made manifest through the body and voice of the performer.
Day 1 Physical Theatre
Physical metaphor and action. Participants will learn a number of expressive tools: elan, struggle, pushing, pulling and being present, and the foundational grammar of impulse, journey, fixed point and the archetypal emotions of Joy, Grief, Fear and Anger.
Day 2 Devised Theatre
David will take the participants on a whirlwind experience of his five phase Creative Practice, which forms the basis of his devising process used by theatre companies and creative organisations around the world.
David Glass is an award-winning performer, director, teacher and creative thinker, having worked in 73 countries and taught more than 80,000 people. He trained at the Lecoq and Decroux schools in Paris and studied with Augusto Boal, Jerzy Grotowski, Peter Brook, Alvin Ailey and Mike Alfreds. As well as teaching masterclasses he continues to make work in some 18 countries around the world.
‘David is one of the great teachers and artists of our time…He has the rare gift of marrying deep intellect and knowledge of a scholar with the playful inquisitiveness of a child’ , Amit Lahav, Artistic Director – Gecko

An Introduction to Eccentric Performance
Use the Eccentric Principles to approach performing and create comic material from a fresh perspective.
If your world is turned upside down, it’s a perfect time to embrace Eccentric Performing – one of the most personal and paradoxical forms of theatre. It can be ingenious or dim-witted, skilful, or blundering. It can have a sharp verbal wit or be completely silent. It can be extremely silly while pointing out the failure of society. Above all, Eccentric Performing is funny!
This workshop will be taught over six consecutive weekends. Each session will last approximately 2 hours and will be recorded and posted for one week to watch if you missed a session. Each week, Avner will feature a new principle and propose an assignment for you to prepare. You’ll use the prompt to inspire a short video, no more than 3 minutes long, and upload it as a private video to YouTube. At the next session the group will view the videos and Avner will offer comments and coaching.
What you will learn:
• Creating and maintaining rapport with any audience
• Applying Lecoq training to clowning
• Turning any audience volunteer into an exceptional volunteer
• And much more!
Avner Eisenberg was described by New York Magazine as ‘Astonishing and funny. A clown for the thinking man’. His show, Avner the Eccentric, was a Broadway hit and appeared in the 1984 and 2002 editions of London International Mime Festival. He is widely known for his portrayal of the lovable holy man in The Jewel of the Nile with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Broaden Your Mime
The mime is a cartoonist of theatre. Getting to the point is fundamental and leaving out the extraneous, a top principle.
Nola’s workshop will explore the art of doing one thing at a time, enhancing quality of movement and articulation, something very necessary to make a performer's intentions clear. Rhythm exercises, improvisation, choreography of comedy, with and without music, will also be part of these classes. Here the face will do the thinking and the body will do the talking.
Wear practice clothes and bring one juggling ball.
One of Europe’s most celebrated theatre clowns, Noa Rae came to London from Sydney in 1963. She trained at the Royal Ballet School and in Paris with Marcel Marceau before launching a career in theatre that has taken her to some 68 countries to date. It was at her instigation that the first mime festival took place at the Cockpit Theatre in 1977. She was appointed MBE for her services to Drama and Mime in 2008.

How To Be A Stupid
Clowns speak the truth – and they are funny. To connect with an audience as a clown is about learning that clowning is a state, not a technique.
Clown training is not purely for people who wish to be clowns or go into comedy, It's a practise that can benefit any creative person - artist, actor, director, writer - by enabling them to achieve a level of resourcefulness, honesty and playfulness that creates work unique to themselves.
De Castro’s course offers serious and enjoyable research into the Clown’s Intelligence and will give participants the confidence to apply the unlimited power of imagination in any creative or performance context.
Drawing on over 40 years as a theatre practitioner dedicated to the research and practice of clowning and performance, de Castro will guide participants along their individual journey as a performer, creating a supportive world in which to explore and learn. Come and delve into the deep art of clowning: expect challenges, change, and a joyful and safe space in which to make mistakes, learn, train, laugh and play.

From Actor to Mime
This 5-day workshop will be an intensive Theatre Re boot camp focusing on how to move from action to poetry, and how one leads to the other.
Through the study of Etienne Decroux's Corporeal Mime repertoire and technique as well as improvisation and composition, we will learn how to play with physical shape, space, rhythm and weight to allow inner impulses to flow into expression. We will look at the balance between spontaneity and technique and explore how to be both real and abstract on stage.
Guillaume Pigé is an actor, director, mime and magician. Originally from France, he has been living in the UK for the past 14 years. He trained with theatre makers including Andrew Visnevski, Steven Wasson, Corinne Soum, Daniel Stein and Thomas Leabhart, and established Theatre Re in 2011. He has directed each of the company's productions to date. Rooted in Etienne Decroux's Corporeal Mime, his practice takes inspiration from science, philosophy, psychology, and public health to address global human challenges through moving and visually striking poetic theatre. His work has been performed in more than 15 countries, notably at The Cerventino Festival (Mexico), Hong Kong Arts Festival, New Victory Theatre (USA), National Taichung Theatre (Taiwan) and London International Mime Festival (UK). He is an associate artist at The Point in Eastleigh, and an associate teacher at RADA. He is regularly invited to give workshops throughout the UK and internationally.

If It’s Bad Make It Worse
‘Commedia contains the essentials of life, trying to eat, trying to procreate and trying desperately to avoid death’ Jacques Lecoq
Commedia is theatre of the human condition in its greatest need, it also celebrates and revels in the skill of the actor. As a form, it has had a huge impact on the work of Told by an Idiot, and this challenging and highly playful 2-day workshop will reveal a toolbox of skills essential for anyone interested in making provocative, unpredictable, performer-driven work.
The workshop will focus on inhabiting a living breathing Commedia, rather than attempting to rediscover an historic tradition. Through a variety of exercises exploring rhythm, timing, building a lazzi, physical virtuosity and staying in the shit, If Its Bad Make It Worse will explore a form that has reinvented itself for over 400 years and whose influence stretches far and wide - from Shakespeare to Molière, Loony Tunes to Fawlty Towers.
“One of the jewels of left-field British theatre”
The Guardian on Told by an Idiot

The state of clown is like a muscle that needs to be exercised; the more practice and training a performer has, the stronger the results. Through the advanced exercises at this course, experienced clowns and actors who use clowning in their work, can stretch themselves to improve their ‘clown-fitness’ and make them better prepared to deal with even more challenging clown scenarios. In this advanced course De Castro focuses specifically on areas that are most challenging for the professional performer.

How We Play and Move
This is a practical workshop that will explore The PappyShow’s playful approach to creating and devising material and their process in making What Do You See?
Over the weekend, we will look at approaches to making movement and playing games, delving into collaborative and inclusive approaches to make work. We will explore some of the exercises and conversations in unconscious bias that we visited throughout making What Do You See?
All you need - just a playful, encouraging and collaborative attitude. We will be working quite physically, so be prepared to sweat, push yourself and have lots of fun. No previous experience necessary.
The PappyShow is a playful and physical ensemble theatre company who create distinctive and critically acclaimed productions, lead inclusive workshops rooted in kindness, and work tirelessly to develop the industry we move in through connection and uplifting.
Formed in 2013 by Kane Husbands to bring people together to move, dance, create moments of radical joy, share stories and take time just to PLAY! The PappyShow work across performance and platform marginalised identities. We use exercise and training to devise and create work. We are a diverse company and difference and diversity are the cornerstones to our work and process. We work with actors, dancers, movers and non-performers, but we only ever expect you to be yourself - we are just US. We use a physical and therapeutic approach to create our work.

The Clown's Intelligence
"The focus on the technical aspects of clowning was really highlighted in this workshop, and I think the online / Zoom format helped with this. I felt like I learnt new things but also consolidated knowledge I already had. I walked away with a tool kit of useful exercises and techniques."
Shae Rooke - actor, clown, comedian, producer.
For clown performers looking to develop their practice, this workshop will focus on ‘clown thinking’.
The clowns’ thought process is different. It’s amazing how it sees the world. What are its mechanisms? How is it developed and maintained?
Often harder than anticipated, concentrating on the clown’s inner monologue allows us not to drop the ‘clown state’. Participants will be challenged not to let their own thoughts precede, interrupt or in any way obstruct their clown thinking. In a series of games and exercises they will deconstruct the mechanism of thought, create space for their clown persona to think, and fill their mind with the clown’s loud voice, leaving no space for anything else. The workshop/toolbox is for experienced silent or non-speaking clowns only.
