A 2-day Idiot exploration of making theatre without words, with Told by an Idiot Artistic Director, Paul Hunter.

"I cannot conceive of my films as other than silent. My shadow appears on the screen as in a dream, and dreams do not speak" - Charlie Chaplin

Inspired by Told by an Idiot's acclaimed show Charlie and Stan - “Seldom less than magical” (The Guardian) Speechless will be a playful, intensive and provocative look at a purer style of performance.

Silent movies are still considered by many to be the essential form of cinema, yet British theatre is still driven by the written word, still fundamentally a literary form.

This 2-day workshop will reveal the comic and the poetic that can be found in silent theatre. The performer will be placed at the heart of the creative process, and through a variety of games and exercises will explore key elements in the process of making theatre without words. By looking at visual narrative, internal monologue, rhythm, the resonance of objects and the use of music, participants will have the opportunity to find detail and freedom in a totally accessible form.

This workshop is aimed at performers and theatre makers with some experience of physical comedy and visual storytelling.

Please note: this workshop requires you to have seen Told by an Idiot’s production of Charlie and Stan at Wilton’s Music Hall. To help with this, when you book a workshop place, you will be sent a discount code to book your ticket for the show.
